Why Some Socks Keep You Comfortable in Every Season

You would think choosing socks would be pretty simple.

Cold outside? Wear thick socks.

Hot outside? Wear thin socks.

Except your feet don't always cooperate with that plan.

You can have freezing feet inside a heavy pair of socks in January and sweaty feet inside lightweight socks in July. That's because keeping your feet at a good temperature isn't just about how thick your socks are.

The fiber matters too.

Warm Feet Aren't Just About Thick Socks

A sock helps control the little environment inside your shoe or boot.

Your feet produce heat and moisture throughout the day. If that moisture stays against your skin, your feet can feel clammy when it's warm and surprisingly cold when the temperature drops.

That's one reason simply piling on thicker socks isn't always the answer.

A good sock needs to help manage both temperature and moisture.

This Is Where Alpaca Gets Interesting

Alpaca fiber has insulating properties that help hold warmth, which makes it an excellent fiber for cold weather socks.

But that doesn't mean alpaca socks are only winter socks.

Alpaca fiber can help manage moisture and temperature inside your footwear. That's useful when you're working outside in January, but it's useful in July too.

Think about somebody spending ten hours in work boots on a hot day. Their problem isn't staying warm. It's dealing with the heat and moisture building up inside those boots.

The goal isn't to make your feet hotter.

The goal is to help your feet maintain a better environment inside your footwear.

That's why we make alpaca socks in different weights and heights instead of making one giant winter sock and calling it a day.

Sock Weight Still Matters

Fiber is only part of the equation.

A heavier alpaca sock can make sense for cold weather, heavy boots or someone whose feet tend to run cold.

A lighter alpaca sock can make more sense in warmer weather, lower shoes or situations where you want less bulk.

Your activity matters too. Someone standing outside for hours in February has very different needs from someone moving constantly inside a warehouse.

And don't forget your boots.

If you stuff a very thick sock into an already snug boot, you can actually make your feet miserable. Your sock and footwear need enough room to work together.

What About Sweaty Feet?

This is one of the biggest reasons we talk so much about fiber.

Sweating is normal. The problem is what happens to that moisture afterward.

If your socks become damp and stay damp, you're spending the rest of the day with wet fabric sitting against your feet.

Not exactly ideal at hour nine of a ten hour shift.

Choosing a sock that manages moisture well can make a huge difference, especially for people who spend most of their day in work boots.

One Fiber. A Lot of Different Days.

This is one of the things we love about alpaca.

We make heavier socks. We make lighter socks. We make boot socks, crew socks and ankle socks.

They're not designed for one particular temperature on a weather app.

They're designed around what your feet are actually doing.

Working outside. Hiking. Standing on concrete. Walking all day. Wearing work boots for ten hours. Shoveling snow. Mowing the lawn.

Because the question isn't really:

“Are alpaca socks warm?”

They are.

The better question is:

“Can alpaca make a good sock when it isn't freezing outside?”

Absolutely.

And once you've spent an entire day in the right pair of socks, you start realizing just how much difference the stuff inside your boots can make.

Made Here in the USA

American Made Alpaca is farmer owned, and our socks are made in the USA. Most of our socks use alpaca fiber grown on American farms too.

We work with different blends, weights and constructions depending on what we want each sock to do.

If you're looking for an everyday work sock, our Alpaca Crew Work Sock is a good place to start. If you need something different, we have lighter, heavier and different height options depending on what you're wearing and what your day looks like.

Always prefer to find American made products and was delighted to find you on the site for the Alliance for American Manufacturing – from the CBS Morning Show. I’ve tried Alpaca socks, in the past, and LOVE them. Looking forward to wearing these and hoping I can get my wife hooked on them!
