How Do I Stop My Socks from Stinking After a Long Day?

You take your boots off after a long day and immediately realize your socks have had a very different day than the rest of you.

So why do socks smell so bad after hours inside work boots?

Moisture is a big part of the problem. Your feet sweat, that moisture gets trapped inside your shoes or boots, and you've created an environment where odor can develop.

If this happens to you regularly, there are a few things worth looking at: your socks, your boots and what you're doing with both after you take them off.

Start With Moisture

Your feet are going to sweat. That's normal.

The important part is what happens to that moisture.

Different fibers handle moisture differently. Cotton can absorb a significant amount of moisture and may stay damp once it gets wet. That's not ideal when your feet are spending eight, ten or twelve hours inside work boots.

This is one reason fiber choice matters when you're choosing socks for long days on your feet.

Why Alpaca Is Interesting for Sweaty Feet

Alpaca fiber is particularly useful in socks because of the way it handles moisture.

Rather than thinking of alpaca simply as a fiber for keeping your feet warm, think about everything that's happening inside your boots during the day.

Your feet are producing heat and moisture. You're walking, standing and moving. Conditions can change considerably between the beginning and end of your shift.

A sock that helps manage that moisture can make a noticeable difference in how it feels and smells at the end of the day.

It's also one reason many people notice they can wear alpaca without it developing odor as quickly as some of the socks they're used to wearing.

Your Boots Matter Too

You can put on a clean pair of socks every morning and still have an odor problem if your boots never get a chance to dry.

After you take your boots off, open them up and give them some air.

If you wear work boots every day and they're still damp inside when you put them back on the next morning, your clean socks are starting the day at a disadvantage.

If possible, rotating between two pairs of work boots can give each pair more time to dry between wears.

Don't Leave Damp Socks in a Pile

Your socks need to dry too.

If you've just spent ten hours sweating in them, rolling them into a ball and tossing them into the bottom of a hamper isn't doing them any favors.

Let damp socks dry before they sit in a laundry pile for several days.

And, of course, wash them according to their care instructions. Different fiber blends require different care, so check the label rather than assuming every pair of socks should be washed exactly the same way.

Make Sure Your Socks Fit

This may not be the first thing you think about when you're dealing with sock odor, but fit still matters.

A sock that's constantly sliding, bunching and moving around inside your boot creates additional friction. And if you've chosen an extremely thick sock for a closely fitting boot, you may also be creating a hotter environment than you need.

The thickest sock isn't automatically the best sock for a long day.

What About Wearing Alpaca Socks More Than Once?

You'll sometimes hear people say they wear alpaca socks several times before washing them because they don't develop odor as quickly.

Some people do.

But how often you wash your socks is going to depend on what you did in them, how much you sweat, how dirty they became and your own preference.

A couple hours walking around town isn't the same thing as twelve hours working in muddy boots.

Use some common sense.

Your socks will let you know.

The Bottom Line

If your socks smell terrible every time you take off your boots, don't just spray something inside your shoes and hope for the best.

Look at the whole system.

Choose socks that manage moisture well. Give your boots time to dry. Don't leave damp socks balled up in a hamper. Make sure your socks and boots fit properly.

And pay attention to fiber.

Alpaca isn't only useful when you're trying to keep your feet warm. Its moisture management properties are one of the reasons we like it so much for people who spend long days inside work boots.
